Government in Colonial New york
The New York colony was ruled over by a governor chosen by the King of England. English and Dutch colonists were allowed some freedoms that they would not have had in the old world (like religious tolerance) but were still primarily under the monarch's rule.
The government was successful, but citizens often did not like or agree with it. Citizens could not vote and were taxed heavily, which lead to the colonists not being very happy with their leaders. |
